REPORT

A sobering return to action after nearly 2 years away from competitive action saw the Cyclones suffer a heavy defeat at the hands of Sheffield Ice Tigers.

With registrations still taking place for next season, the squad was missing a number of key players. However, it’s difficult to see how the Cyclones could have taken anything away from a dominant opposition on the night.

It was to be expected that it would take the team a while to find their sharpness again after so long off, and this was reflected in a disappointing first period, with the Ice Tigers scoring 3 quick goals with net minder James Guest offered minimal protection.

The Cyclones began to grow into the second period but discipline slipped and allowed the Ice Tigers plenty of power play opportunities which they capitalised on to take an 11-0 lead into the third.

The final period of the game was by far the most pleasing for the Cyclones as they seemed to settle into the quicker tempo and played with more freedom. 3 minutes in a strong chase by Fry to retrieve a loose puck deep into the Ice Tigers zone allowed him to absorb the contact from the chasing defence and make a play off the wall to new assistant captain Ben Waplington who finished smartly from just above the circles.

The Cyclones held their nerve for the remainder of the match, providing Guest with the support needed to maintain a clean card for the final part of the game and take away at least some positives from the match as the team moves forward through pre season.
